What GEO means for a business website
Generative engine optimisation, or GEO, is the work of making a business easy for AI-assisted search experiences to describe accurately. It focuses on clear entity information, original expertise and evidence that can be checked. GEO does not mean inserting a list of AI keywords or trying to force a chatbot to recommend a company.
Entities, not keywords
Generative systems reason about entities: who you are, what you do, where you work, who you help and who says so. Clear, consistent descriptions across the website, business profiles and relevant third-party sources do more than any single page optimisation.
Start with information you can verify
A business should make its legal or trading name, core services, location or service area, contact method and author information easy to find. Service pages should state what is included, what is not included and the audience they serve. When a page makes a claim about a process, add the explanation or source that lets a reader judge it.
Publish work that adds evidence
Generic advice is easy to reproduce and hard to trust. A stronger page documents a real method, a decision framework, a before-and-after observation with permission, or a practical checklist used in delivery. The goal is not length for its own sake. The goal is information that answers a buyer question better than a generic summary.
No guarantees
Nobody controls what an assistant says or which source it cites. What a business can control is whether the correct information exists, is unambiguous and is corroborated elsewhere. Measure visibility over time, correct factual errors and avoid agencies that promise a guaranteed citation or a fixed AI ranking.
Where to begin
Choose one commercial service page and one supporting article. Make the service page clear about the audience, scope and process. Link the article to that page with descriptive anchor text. Keep the organization details consistent on the website, Google Business Profile and trusted listings. Then review the answers that appear for real buyer questions before publishing more pages.
